Mumbai stocks retreated after sharp gains in the last ten days and on earnings jitters. Jindal Steel surged after its earnings gained on currency bets. Aditya Birla Nuvo Ltd dropped on poor results. DLF fell back from its recent highs ahead of earnings. National Fertilizers declined.

Nissan Quarterly Loss; Yahoo Japan Surges

Nissan reported its third quarterly loss and Honda first quarter net plunged 96%. Yahoo Japan surged after it estimated higher sales and earnings in the second quarter. Nippon steel declined after it estimated loss in the second quarter.

The RBI left its key lending rate unchanged at 3.25% but lifted its inflation outlook in the current financial year. Adani Power Limited initial public offering is oversubscribed by anchor investors. Grasim Industries profit surged 68%.

Internet major Yahoo second quarter revenue declined 13% to $1.57 billion but cost cutting measures paid off and net income rose 8% to $141 million. Earnings per share were 10 cents compared to 9 cents in the prior year quarter. New Homepage was also introduced with new features.

Dollar, Treasuries Decline on Home Sales

The dollar edged lower after new home sales in the U.S. increased 11% in June, the sharpest monthly gain in eight years. Alberto Culver, Corning, Cott, LVMH, Pearson and Verizon fell after earnings. Dollar dropped to two-month low and Treasury bond yields increased.

UK stocks continued to rally for the eleventh day in a row. Commodities and earnings linked stocks closed higher. Rexam is expected to raise ₤350 million in rights issue. Beazley Group declined on 55% drop in earnings. Pearson increased 12% after it increased its dividend.

The online retailer revenue rose 14% to $4.65 billion in the quarter. Net quarterly profit declined 10% to $142 million punctuated by a steep decline in its flagship business of selling media products like books, music and DVDs. Earnings per share fell to 32 cents from 37 cents a year-ago quarter.
