Banks and automobiles makers stocks gained in European trading. The sharply higher earnings from Goldman Sachs in New York lifted banking stocks in Europe and UK. Software AG proposed to acquire IDS Scheer AG in a bid that values the company at 477 million euros.

Mining stocks rally in London lifted FTSE 100 index higher. Britvic Plc edged up 3% after it estimated higher than expected annual earnings. The industrial chain maker Renold dropped 7% after full year earnings plunged 72%.

Stocks in Japan rebounded after a sell-off that has lasted two weeks. Banks, securities and commodities companies closed higher. Hisamitsu Pharmaceuticals agreed to acquire Miami, Florida based Noven Pharmaceuticals for $430 million. Nissan surged after it increased production in China.

The discount retailer net quarterly sales rose 8.3% to $1.84 billion on comparable store sales growth of 6.2%. Net quarterly income increased 35.5% to $87.7 million propelled by strong consumables category performance. Earnings per share surged to 62 cents from 46 cents a year-ago quarter.

Australian stocks recorded single day best gain in the last seven months on a global rally in stocks and optimism of better earnings. However, trading volumes were thin. Energy Resources, the largest uranium miner reported 44% increase in output. Cochlear plunged declined 4% after earnings.

Goldman Sachs reported second quarter revenues surged 46% to $113.76 billion and net earnings soared 89% to $3.45 billion. The corporations around the world took opportunity to raise capital in stocks and debt offering lifting underwriting revenues in the quarter.

European markets closed higher on the back of rally in banking and steelmaker stocks in Germany and France. Banks surged on the hopes that the U.S. banks earnings this week in New York will be better than expectations. Thyssen Krupp, Salzgitter, ArcelorMittal jumped. Philips gained on earnings.

CIT Group led decliners in the S&P 500 index as the company faces prospects of bankruptcy. Expeditors International estimated substantially lower quarter earnings. American Dairy, China based milk powder producer and distributor plunged 40% after the company estimated revenues below expectations.

The restaurant operator quarterly revenue dipped 7.1% to $317.2 million on same-restaurant sales fall of 3.2%. Net income increased 3.7% to $14.4 million in the quarter. Earnings per share rose to 28 cents from 27 cents the prior-year quarter.

Stocks in HK and Shanghai declined after the Central bank in Beijing sounded cautionary note on the recent rise in bank loans. Exports in June fell 21.4% and trade surplus plunged 40%. Chaina Eastern and Shanghai Airlines announced merger plan. Chigo Group completed initial public offering in HK.

The ruling LDP party in Japan faces uphill task on the election scheduled on August 30. The opposition party DPJ controls the upper house of the National Diet and is favored to win the election. Stocks fell on the election uncertainty. Kirin and Suntory are reported in merger talks.
