Australian markets closed lower on the worries that a slowdown in China would dampen the demand for commodities. Leighton Holdings soared 11% after its German parent Hochtief AG offered to increase its stake. Insurance Australia plans to raise $200 million.

Dishman Pharma is in talks to sell its land assets in Gujarat to Nirma for 650 crore rupees. EIL won $139 million contract from Nigerian. L&T won new orders worth Rs 2,935 crore. Reliance Mediaworks plans to delist its shares.

Stocks on Wall Street struggled to advance after trade deficit widened in January and employers added more than expected 175,000 jobs in February. Canada said its trade deficit shrank to $0.2 billion but exports rose 5.3%. Albertsons offered $40 a share or $4.9 billion for Safeway Inc.
