December home sales declined 16.7% from a year ago to 5.45 million. Sales in 2009 increased for the first time since 2005. Housing inventory at the end of the month was at 7.2-month supply.

Seasonally adjusted existing home sales in December decreased 16.7% to 5.45 million units from 6.54 million in November but 15% higher from a year ago month in 2008 of 4.74 million units.
Existing home sales in 2009 increased 4.9% from a year ago to 5.15 million, its first annual increase since 2005.
Total housing inventory at the end of December declined 6.6% to 3.29 million, approximately 7.2 month supply.
