Starbucks reports strong quarterly results on cost cutting. Sotheby’s loss widens on weak auction environment.[/R]

Of the stocks in S&P 500 index, 220 increased, 266 declined and 14 were unchanged.

American International Group, Inc led the decliners in the S&P 500 index with a loss of 10.1% followed by losses in VeriSign, Inc of 8.0%, in Sunoco, Inc of 5.1%, in Rockwell Automation, Inc of 3.1% and in Gannett Co., Inc of 2.4%.

International Game Technology led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 8.8% followed by gains in JDS Uniphase Corporation 7.4%, in NVIDIA Corporation of 6.8% and in Lennar Corporation of 6.1%.

Aceto Corporation ((ACET)) advanced 5.8% or 32 cents to $5.78 after the distributor of chemicals and generic drugs reported first quarter sales fell 24.7% to $70.6 million from $93.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 78.3% to $1.0 million or 4 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $4.6 million or 18 cents per share a year ago.

A.C. Moore Arts & Crafts, Inc ((ACMR)) after the specialty retailer of arts, crafts and floral merchandise reported third quarter sales fell 9% to $106.1 million from $116.7 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $12.9 million or 53 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $7.5 million or 37 cents per share a year ago.

Activision Blizzard Inc ((ATVI)) added 4.9% or 53 cents to $11.40 after the video-game developer said third quarter revenue rose to $703 million from $680 million a year ago.

Allos Therapeutics, Inc ((ALTH)) the cancer drug developer increased 5.2% or 31 cents to $6.20.

Amerisafe, Inc ((AMSF)) added 0.2% or 5 cents to $18.63 an insurer said third quarter revenues fell 12% to $67.2 million from $76.3 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 12.7% to $15.1 million or 74 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $13.4 million or 65 cents per share a year ago.

American Science and Engineering, Inc ((ASEI)) gained 2.6% or $1.83 to $72.18 after the maker of bomb-detecting equipment for security inspections said second quarter earnings per share of $1.18 compared to 83 cents diluted per share a year ago.

Arena Resources, Inc ((ARD)) decreased 3.9% or $1.68 to $41.13, an oil and natural gas exploration company said third quarter revenues fell 47% to $36.1 million from $68.4 million a year ago. Atmel Corporation ((ATML)) advanced 3.1% or 12 cents to $3.91 after the chipmaker said third quarter revenues fell 20.6% to $317.7 million from $400.0 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $17.5 million or 4 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $4.7 million or 1 cent per share a year ago.

Blue Nile, Inc ((NILE)) climbed 3.8% or $2.28 to $61.00 an online jewelry retailer said third quarter sales rose 2.3% to $66.9 million from $65.4 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 13% to $2.6 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.3 million or 15 cents per share a year ago.

California Pizza Kitchen, Inc ((CPKI)) dropped 0.2% or 3 cents to $13.81 after the restaurant chain said third quarter sales fell 5.3% to $164.8 million from $174 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 16% to $5.8 million or 24 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $5 million or 20 cents per share a year ago.

Choice Hotels International, Inc ((CHH)) rose 2.0% or 64 cents to $31.59 after the hotel franchisor said third quarter revenues fell 13% to $166 million from $191.2 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 8.6% to $32.8 million or 55 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $35.9 million or 57 cents per share a year ago.

Dolan Media Company ((DM)) increased 7.7% or 99 cents to $13.77 after the provider of business information and professional services reported third quarter revenues rose 30% to $62.3 million from $47.9 million a year ago. NIC Inc ((EGOV)) added 3.1% or 26 cents to $8.65 after the provider of eGovernment services said third quarter revenues rose 50% to $37.3 million from $24.9 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 32% to $4.1 million or 6 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $3.1 million or 5 cents per share a year ago.

The PMI Group, Inc ((PMI)) surged 12.1% or 27 cents to $2.50 after the mortgage insurer reported third quarter revenues rose 0.6% to $226.9 million from $225.5 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $93.2 million or $1.13 per diluted share compared to net loss of $229.4 million or $2.81 per share a year ago.

Skyworks Solutions, Inc ((SWKS)) increased 7.1% or 78 cents to $11.76 after the wireless semiconductor maker said fourth quarter revenue increased 19% to $228.1 million from $191.2 million a year ago.

Smith & Nephew plc ((SNN)) slipped 0.5% or 26 cents to $44.65 after the medical device maker reported third quarter revenues fell 1.6% to $915 million from $930 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 73% to $128 million or 14.4 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $74 million or 8.3 cents per share a year ago.

Starbucks Corporation ((SBUX)) rose 3.8% or 76 cents to $20.46 after the coffee chain reported fourth quarter revenues fell 4% to $2.42 billion from $2.52 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $150 million or 20 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $5.4 million or 1 cent per share a year ago.

Sotheby''s ((BID)) rose 0.8% or 16 cents to $18.36 after the auction house said third quarter net loss was $57.8 million or 89 cents diluted per share compared to $47.0 million or 73 cents per share a year ago.

Tenaris S.A ((TS)) rose 0.4% or 18 cents to $39.56 after the producer of seamless steel pipes for the energy industry said third quarter sales fell 42.3% to $1.77 billion from $3.07 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 60% to $229.9 million or 19 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $570.6 million or 48 cents per share a year ago.

ViaSat, Inc ((VSAT)) climbed 3.1% or 91 cents to $29.97 after the producer of satellite and other wireless communications and networking systems said second quarter revenues rose 1% to $160.7 million from $159.3 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 1% to $9.2 million or 28 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $9.3 million or 29 cents per share a year ago.
