Citigroup Inc led the decliners in the S&P 500 index with a loss of 4.6%. WD-40 Company posts stronger fourth quarter. Xilinx, Inc second quarter sales fall. Polaris Industries Inc quarterly profit dips.[/R]

Of the stocks in S&P 500 index, 201 increased, 288 declined and 11 were unchanged.

Citigroup Inc led the decliners in the S&P 500 index with a loss of 4.6% followed by losses in Wynn Resorts, Limited of 4.5%, in Capital One Financial Corporation of 4.2%, in The Charles Schwab Corporation of 4.1% and in Amphenol Corporation of 3.7%.

Safeway Inc led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 7.4% followed by gains in DeVry Inc 3.2%, in The Kroger Co of 3.1% and in QLogic Corporation of 3.0%.

AptarGroup, Inc ((ATR)) decreased 3.1% or $1.21 to $37.68 after the maker of dispensers for perfumes and other liquids said third quarter sales fell 11% to $473.7 million from $532.2 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 15.6% to $33.5 million or 48 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $39.7 million or 57 cents per share a year ago.

Allegheny Technologies Incorporated ((ATI)) added 2.1% or 85 cents to $38.44 after the specialty-metals producer was upgraded to “buy” from “neutral” at UBS AG.

Baxter International Inc ((BAX)) declined 3.6% or $2.09 to $54.91 after the maker of the swine flu vaccine reported third quarter net income rose 12% to $530 million from $472 million a year ago.

Citigroup Inc ((C)) fell 4.6% or 23 cents to $4.77 after the finance company reported third quarter sales rose 25% to $20.4 billion from $16.3 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $101 million or 27 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $2.8 billion or 61 cents per share a year ago.

Cypress Semiconductor Corporation ((CY)) dropped 2.5% or 26 cents to $10.02 after the semiconductor company reported third quarter revenues fell 20% to $178.7 million from $222.7 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $19.7 million or 13 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $138 million or 86 cents per share a year ago.

DSW Inc ((DSW)) surged 13.8% to $20.10 after the shoe retailer lifted its full-year earnings outlook to a range between 70 and 80 cents a share from its previous estimate between 37 cents and 45 cents a share. The company also estimated third quarter same store sales increase between 6% and 8% and for the year to be flat after dropping 4% a year ago.

Datalink Corporation ((DTLK)) declined 4.3% or 20 cents to $4.40 after the provider of data center infrastructure solutions and services said third quarter sales fell 14.6% to $42.7 million from $50 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was to $84,000 or 1 cent per diluted share compared to net income of $1.1 million or 8 cents per share a year ago.

Fairchild Semiconductor International, Inc ((FCS)) declined 4.3% or 42 cents to $9.20 after the semiconductor supplier reported third quarter revenues fell 22.5% to $331.8 million from $428.3 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 90% to $2.7 million or 2 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $26.7 million or 21 cents per share a year ago.

The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc ((GS)) decreased 2.0% or $3.84 to $188.40 after the bank reported third quarter revenues rose 105% to $12.37 billion from $6.04 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 271.6% to $3.01 billion or $5.25 per diluted share compared to net income of $810 million or $1.81 per share a year ago.

Harley-Davidson,Inc ((HOG)) fell 0.3% or 11 cents to $26.15 after the motorcycle manufacturer reported third quarter revenues fell 21% to $1.12 billion from $1.42 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 84% to $26.5 million or 11 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $166.5 million or 71 cents per share a year ago.

Knology, Inc ((KNOL)) dropped 0.9% or 10 cents to $10.80 after the manufacturer of furniture products reported third quarter sales fell 36% to $181.3 million from $283.5 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 76.3% to $5.7 million or 13 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $24.1 million or 52 cents per share a year ago.

Lazard Ltd ((LZA)) decreased 0.8% to $42.90 after it appointed an interim chief executive Steven J. Golub after Chairman and chief executive Bruce Wasserstein passed away at the age of 61.

Nokia Corporation ((NOK)) plunged 11.1% or $1.71 to $13.68 after the cell phones and other hand held devices maker reported third quarter sales fell 19.7% to €9.8 billion from €12.2 billion a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was €913 million or €0.15 per diluted share compared to net income of €1.05 billion or €0.29 per share a year ago.

Omniture, Inc ((OMTR)) was unchanged at $21.43 after the provider of online business optimization software reported third quarter revenues rose 13% to $87.9 million from $77.8 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $8.5 million or 11 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $17.3 million or 24 cents per share a year ago.

Polaris Industries Inc ((PII)) added 2.2% or $1.00 to $45.00 after the maker of all-terrain vehicles, snowmobiles and motorcycles reported third quarter sales fell 25% to $436.2 million from $580.3 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 17.2% to $31.2 million or 94 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $37.7 million or $1.13 per share a year ago.

PPG Industries, Inc ((PPG)) decrease 0.05% or 3 cents to $61.50 after the maker of paints, optical products and coatings reported third quarter sales fell 23.6% to $3.23 billion from $4.23 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 36% to $159 million or 96 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $117 million or 70 cents per share a year ago.

Rubio’s Restaurants, Inc ((RUBO)) surged 30.0% or $1.80 to $7.80 after the owner of Rubio’s Baja Grill restaurants said that its board of directors had received an unsolicited from a group consisting of Alex Meruelo and his affiliates and Levine Leichtman Capital Partners offered $8.00 per share.

Safeway Inc ((SWY)) increased 6.8% or $1.47 to $22.90 after the food and drug retailer reported third quarter sales fell 7% to $9.46 billion from $10.17 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 35.5% to $128.8 million or 31 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $199.7 million or 46 cents per share a year ago.

Stanley Furniture Company, Inc ((STLY)) added 6.6% or 66 cents to $10.65 after the maker of furniture said third quarter sales fell 29.4% to $38.5 million from $54.5 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $5.1 million or 49 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $3.5 million or 34 cents per share a year ago.

Southwest Airlines Co ((LUV)) fell 0.7% or 7 cents to $9.97 after the airline reported third quarter revenues fell 7.6% to $2.67 billion from $2.89 billion a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $16 million or 2 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $120 million or 16 cents per share a year ago.

SunPower Corporation ((SPWRA)) fell 0.7% 23 cents to $32.21 after the supplier of high-efficiency solar modules was upgraded to “outperform” from “neutral” at Robert Baird.

Ultratech, Inc ((UTEK)) rose 1.4% or 16 cents to $15.60 after the semiconductor equipment maker reported third quarter sales fell 27.6% to $24.9 million from $34.4 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 69.7% to $1.0 million or 4 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $3.3 million or 14 cents per share a year ago.

WD-40 Company ((WDFC)) advanced 5.4% or $1.72 to $33.55 after the consumer products maker said fourth quarter sales rose 1.2% to $77.8 million from $76.9 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 64% to $7.62 million or 46 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $4.65 million or 28 cents per share a year ago.

Westamerica Bancorporation ((WABC)) rose 1.6% or 83 cents to $51.73 after the bank said third quarter interest income rose 26.5% to $61.6 million from $48.7 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $23.8 million or 81 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $44,000 or break even per share a year ago.

Winnebago Industries, Inc ((WGO)) increased 1.3% or 19 cents to $14.55 after the manufacturer of motor homes reported fourth quarter revenues fell 30.2% to $59.5 million from $85.3 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $50.2 million or $1.73 per diluted share compared to net loss of $12.7 million or 44 cents per share a year ago.

Xilinx, Inc ((XLNX)) dropped 0.1% or 3 cents to $23.97 after the chip maker said second quarter revenues fell 14.2% to $415 million from $483.5 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 21% to $64 million or 23 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $81.1 million or 29 cents per share a year ago.

Zep Inc ((ZEP)) fell 0.2% or 4 cents to $18.57 after the provider of cleaning and maintenance solutions said fourth quarter sales fell 12% to $134.3 million from $152.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 21.3% to $6.3 million or 30 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $8 million or 37 cents per share a year ago.
