Torchmark Corporation led the decliners in the S&P 500 index with a loss of 3.8% followed by losses in Jacobs Engineering Group Inc of 2.7%, in SLM Corporation of 2.5%, in Citigroup Inc of 2.3% and in The Bank of New York Mellon Corporation of 2.1%.

Textron Inc led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 5.0% followed by gains in Family Dollar Stores, Inc 4.6%, in Big Lots, Inc of 2.8% and St. Jude Medical, Inc of 2.2%.

Brown Shoe Company, Inc ((BWS)) fell 9.4% or 73 cents to $7.28 after the footwear company reported second quarter sales fell 10.1% to $511.6 million from $569.2 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $4.2 million or 10 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.2 million or 5 cents per share a year ago.

Bridgepoint Education, Inc. ((BPI)) decreased 7.8% to $19.17 after the company filed to sell up to 11 million shares. All shares are offered by the existing share holders including Warburg Pincus Private Equity funds.

Dollar Tree, Inc ((DLTR)) added 6.3% or $3.05 to $50.95 after the operator of discount variety stores reported second quarter sales rose 11.9% to $1.22 billion from $1.09 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 51.3% to $56.9 million or 63 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $37.6 million or 42 cents per share a year ago.

DSW Inc ((DSW)) advanced 7.2% or $1.02 to $15.04 after the footwear retailer reported second quarter sales rose 3.4% to $369.5 million from $357.2 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 31% to $7.6 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $11.0 million or 25 cents per share a year ago.

Dycom Industries, Inc ((DY)) increased 0.4% or 7 cents to $14.25 after the telecommunications contractor said fourth quarter revenues fell 16.3% to $269.7 million from $322.1 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 113% to $6.6 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $3.1 million or 8 cents per share a year ago.

Eastman Kodak Company ((EK)) surged 10.5% to $5.03.

Isle of Capri Casinos, Inc ((ISLE)) fell 11.5% or $1.39 to $10.60 after the gaming and entertainment company reported first quarter sales fell 6.3% to $259.9 million from $277.4 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $0.9 million or 3 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $3.6 million or 12 cents per share a year ago.

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc ((JEC)) slipped 2.2% or $1.03 to $45.37 after the engaged in providing a range of technical said that it received a subcontract from Vetco LLC to assist in providing technical services under the Program Management, Administrative, Clerical, and Technical Services multiple-award procurement for the department of homeland security.

Kirkland’s, Inc ((KIRK)) climbed 9.9% or $1.25 to $13.78 after home accessories retailer reported second quarter sales were flat at $87.7 million from $87.7 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $3.4 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $1.7 million or 9 cents per share a year ago.

New York & Company, Inc ((NWY)) rose 3.5% or 17 cents to $4.93 after the specialty retailer of women's apparel reported second quarter sales fell 16% to $247.8 million from $295.7 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $4.8 million or 8 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $8.8 million or 14 cents per share a year ago.

QAD Inc ((QADI)) added 1.0% or 5 cents to $4.27 after the business software provider said second quarter revenues fell 26% to $51.3 million from $69.5 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was flat at $1.4 million or 5 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $1.4 million or 5 cents per share a year ago.

Textron Inc ((TXT)) the multi industry company with a global network of aircraft, defense gained 4.4% or 66 cents to $15.46.

Torchmark Corporation ((TMK)) an insurance company fell 3.3% or $1.44 to $42.24.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc ((WSM)) rallied 13.3% or $2.08 to $17.51 after the home decor retailer reported second quarter sales fell 18% to $672.1 million from $819.6 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 98% to $399,000 or break even per diluted share compared to net income of $18.4 million or 17 cents per share a year ago.
