Finisar at New 5-Year High; Vail Resorts Reports Weak Q1 Results

Earnings Review

The Cooper Companies, Inc ((COO)) jumped 2.2% or $3.75 to $171.55 after the soft contact lenses maker reported revenues in the fourth-quarter ending in October soared 14% from a year ago to $518.7 million.

Net income in the quarter surged 64.9% to $60.5 million or $1.23 per diluted share compared to the $36.7 million or 75 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

The contact lenses maker forecasted total revenues in fiscal 2017 between $2.09 billion and $2.13 billion.

Finisar Corporation ((FNSR)) slumped 2.6% or 89 cents to $33.25 after the optical cables provider said revenues in the second-quarter ending in October advanced 8.4% from a year ago to $369.9 million.

Net income in the quarter more than doubled to $48.8 million or 43 cents per diluted share compared to the $23.9 million or 22 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

In the third-quarter, Finisar estimated revenues in the range of $378 million to $398 million and non-GAAP gross margin of about 37% to 38%, non-GAAP operating margin of approximately 18.5% to 19.5%, and diluted earnings per share in the range of 58 cents to 64 cents.

Ferrellgas Partners, L.P ((FGP)) increased 1.6% or 11 cents to $6.81 after the propane retailer said revenues in the first-quarter ending in October jumped 22.1% from a year ago to $379.5 million.

Net loss in the quarter narrowed to $42.6 million or 44 cents per diluted share compared to the $79 million or 79 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

Fred''s, Inc ((FRED)) decreased 1.5% or 16 cents to $10.68 after the discount stores operator said revenues in the third-quarter ending on October 29 dropped 4.5% from a year ago to $516.6 million.

Comparable store sales in the third quarter declined 3.8%.

Net in the quarter swung to a loss of $38.4 million or $1.05 per diluted share compared to the profit of $1.4 million or 4 cents per share from the same quarter last year.

The discount stores operator said sales in the four-week ending on November 26 slumped 3.6% to $159.7 million and comparable store sales in November decreased 2.9%.

Genesee & Wyoming Inc ((GWR)) gained 43 cents to $79.97 after the freight and logistics group said traffic in November rose 3.7% to 247,470 carloads compared to the same month a year ago.

In the fourth-quarter, traffic edged up 0.6% from a year ago to 492,814 carloads.

Vail Resorts, Inc ((MTN)) advanced 3.9% or $6.22 to $167.14 after the mountain resort, luxury hotels operator reported revenues in the third-quarter ending in October increased 2.1% from a year ago to $178.3 million.

Net loss in the quarter widened to $62.6 million or $1.70 per diluted share compared to loss of $59.6 million or $1.63 per share from the same quarter last year.
