Stocks in Mumbai plunged after markets indexes in Asia tracked lower following sharp falls in Europe and in the U.S. in overnight trading.

European markets dropped between 2% and 4% and market indexes in New York declined 1.8% and crude oil futures extended losses and fell near $50 a barrel for the U.S. delivery.

Investors in Europe sold stocks on the first trading day of the year after fears of Greece leaving the euro zone resurfaced and Germany reported stagnant prices in December.

Indian rupee eased to 63.57 against one dollar.

The Sensex Index plunged 854.86 or 3.1% to close at 26,987.46. The CNX Nifty declined 251.05 or 3% to 8,127.35.

Gainers & Losers

Apollo Hospitals Enterprise, Ltd dropped 3% to Rs 1,096.80 after the hospital operator agreed to acquire Nova Speciality Hospitals for about Rs 145 crore.

Bajaj Corp Limited declined 3.6% to Rs 385.20 and The Reserve Bank allowed foreign investors to buy up to 49% of paid up capital in the company.

Jubilant Life Sciences Limited climbed 3.7% to Rs 144.85 after the pharmaceutical company received final approvals from the U.S. health regulator for two generic drugs.

SML Isuzu, Ltd jumped 4.7% to Rs 939.75 after the automobile maker said December sales surged 62.57% to 1,073 vehicles from a year ago period.

Videocon Industries Limited slid 0.7% to Rs 160.45 after the consumer goods provider’s unit Videocon d2h plans to sell 33.5% stake worth $300 million to the U.S.-based Silver Eagle.

Zen Technologies Limited climbed 4.9% to Rs 48.85 after the personal computer maker plans to set up a unit in United Arab Emirates.
