The Sensex Index plunged 449.22 or 2.3% to close at 18,733.04 The CNX Nifty dropped 143.15 or 2.5% to close at 5,542.25.
The rupee declined 1.2% to close at 61.61 against one dollar and the current account deficit in the March quarter widened to 4.8% of gross domestic product.

Crompton Greaves Limited gained 2.9% to Rs 84.45 after the first-quarter consolidated net profit plunged 30.1% to Rs 60.08 crore but revenues jumped 12.3% to Rs 3,157.22 crore.
Engineers India Limited declined 6.5% to Rs 125.20 after the first-quarter net profit slipped 16.2% to Rs 129.34 crore and revenues tumbled 35.6% to Rs 511.22 crore.
eClerx Services Limited climbed 3.7% to Rs 768.40 after net profit surged 28.1% to Rs 61.70 crore and net sales advanced 8.9% to Rs 189.92 crore.
New Delhi Television Limited plunged 20% to Rs 74.80 after the net loss in the first quarter narrowed to Rs 24.04 crore compared to Rs 26.09 crore and revenues dropped 4.1% to Rs 102.40 crore.
Radico Khaitan Limited gained 2.4% to Rs 93.85 after the first-quarter net profit rose 6.6% to Rs 22.51 crore and net sales surged 19.8% to Rs 348.44 crore.
Supreme Infrastructure India Limited jumped 2.8% to Rs 162 after the company secured new orders worth Rs 1,111.9 crore.
Symphony Limited surged 15.7% to Rs 323 after net profit in the fourth-quarter surged 31.7% to Rs 25.90 crore and revenues soared 27.1% to Rs 114.42 crore.
Tata Power Company Limited plunged 14.8% to Rs 71.35 after net in the quarter swung to a loss of Rs 114.70 crore compared to a profit of Rs 145.93 crore. Revenues jumped 24.54% to Rs 9,111.57 crore.
Wockhardt Limited dropped 5% to Rs 381.30 after the Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration filed regulatory action against the company for selling banned drugs.
