U.S. Movers: A. Schulman, Bed Bath, CarMax, Pier 1, PriceSmart

    A. Schulman second quarter net soared 28%. Bed Bath fourth quarter net surged 32% to $351 million. CarMax fourth quarter net increased 4% to $95 million. Ruby Tuesday third quarter net tumbled 72% and Pier 1 fourth quarter net soared 24% to $115.2 million.

A. Schulman, Inc. ((SHLM)) declined 11.9% or $3.32 to $24.53 after the plastic compounds supplier reported second quarter net sales fell 2.5% to $495.9 million from $508.3 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter soared 28.2% to $9.1 million or 31 cents per diluted share compared to $7.1 million or 23 cents per share in the year ago earlier.

Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. ((BBBY)) advanced 7.5% or $4.97 to $71.20 after the retail store operator reported fourth quarter net sales increased 9.1% to $2.73 billion from $2.51 billion in the same quarter last year. Comparable store sales in the quarter increased 6.8%. Net earnings in the quarter surged 32% to $351.0 million or $1.48 per diluted share compared to $283.5 million or $1.12 per share in the year ago.

For 2011 net sales grew 8.5% to $9.50 billion from $8.76 billion in last year. Comparable store sales for the year increased 5.9%. Net earnings for the year soared 32% to $989.5 million or $4.06 per diluted share compared to $791.3 million or $3.07 per share in the prior year.

The retailer expects first quarter earnings between 79 to 83 cents a share.

CarMax, Inc. ((KMX)) slipped 2.2% or 80 cents to $34.12 after the used car retailer reported fourth quarter net sales increased 10% to $2.48 billion from $2.25 billion in the same quarter last year. Comparable store used unit sales for the quarter rose 4%. Net earnings in the quarter rose 3.8% to $95.0 million or 41 cents per diluted share compared to $88.7 million or 39 cents per share in the year ago earlier.

For 2011 net sales grew 11% to $10.0 billion from $8.98 billion in last year. Comparable store used unit sales for the year rose 1%. Net earnings for the year increased 10% to $413.8 million or $1.79 per diluted share compared to $377.5 million or $1.65 per share in the prior year.

Constellation Brands, Inc. ((STZ)) dropped 12.8% or $3.17 to $21.52 after the wine maker reported fourth quarter net sales decreased 12% to $628.1 million from $715.3 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter declined 63% to $103.0 million or 51 cents per diluted share compared to $279.8 million or $1.32 per share in the year ago period.

For 2011 net sales decreased 20% to $2.65 billion from $3.33 billion in last year. Net income for the year slumped 20% to $445.0 million or $2.13 per diluted share compared to $559.5 million or $2.62 per share in the prior year.

Pier 1 Imports, Inc. ((PIR)) fell 3 cents to $18.23 after the home furnishing retailer reported fourth quarter net sales grew 12% to $476.8 million from $426.6 million in the same quarter last year. Comparable store sales increase of 10.3%. Net income in the quarter increased 24.2% to $115.2 million or $1.04 per diluted share compared to $57.1 million or 48 cents per share in the year ago earlier.

For 2011 net sales increased 9% to $1.53 billion from $1.40 billion in last year. Comparable store sales increase of 9.5%. Net income for the year increased 11% to $168.9 million or $1.48 per diluted share compared to $100.1 million or 85 cents per share in the prior year.

Mistras Group, Inc. ((MG)) decreased 2.2% or 53 cents to $23.21 after the data analysis software reported third quarter revenue soared 31% to $104.1 million from $79.2 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased 24.6% to $3.04 million or 11 cents per diluted share compared to $2.44 million or 9 cents per share in the year ago period.

The software company now projected fiscal 2012 revenues to be in the range of $415 to $420 million.

PriceSmart, Inc. ((PSMT)) gained 3.4% or $2.43 to $73.51 after the warehouse clubs operator reported second quarter total revenues grew 22.3% to $549.8 million from $449.6 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased 12.8% to $20.2 million or 67 cents per diluted share compared to $17.9 million or 60 cents per share in the year ago quarter.

Ruby Tuesday, Inc. ((RT)) slumped 12.2% or $1.09 to $7.79 after the restaurants operator reported third quarter total revenue rose 1.8% to $324.8 million from $319.1 million in the same quarter last year. Same restaurant sales decreased 5.0%. Net income in the quarter tumbled 71.7% to $4.54 million or 7 cents per diluted share compared to $16.0 million or 25 cents per share in the year ago earlier.

Ruby plans to acquire Lime Fresh Mexican Grill for a price of $24 million
