Applied Materials, Inc ((AMAT)) decreased 3.6% or 41 cents to $10.95 after the manufacturing equipment, service and software provider reported third quarter net sales increased 11% to $2.79 billion from $2.52 billion last year. Net income in the quarter soared to $476 million or 36 cents per diluted share compared to $123 million or 9 cents per share a year ago.

Big Lots, Inc. ((BIG)) decreased 1.3% or 43 cents to $31.95 after the specialty retailer reported second quarter net sales rose 2.2% to $1.17 billion from $1.14 billion last year. Comparable store sales decreased 1.5%.

Net income in the quarter grew to $35.7 million or 50 cents per diluted share compared to $38.9 million or 48 cents per share a year ago earlier.

Bio-Reference Laboratories, Inc. ((BRLI)) fell 0.9% or 18 cents to $18.74 after the diagnostic test service provider said third quarter revenue increased 22% to $148.0 million from $121.7 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $10.1 million or 36 cents per diluted share compared to $8.0 million or 29 cents per share a year ago period.

Collective Brands, Inc. ((PSS)) soared 19.3% or $1.99 to $12.27 after the apparel retailer said second quarter net sales increased 4.9% to $882.4 million from $841.3 million last year. Net loss in the quarter was $35.0 million or 58 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $21.1 million or 32 cents per share a year ago.

Express, Inc. ((EXPR)) gained 2.2% or 41 cents to $18.44 after the specialty apparel reported second quarter net sales increased 10% to $446.0 million from $407.3 million last year. Net income in the quarter decreased $12.6 million or 14 cents per diluted share compared to $22.1 million or 25 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

Fred’s, Inc. ((FRED)) fell 0.09% or 1 cent to $10.86 after the general merchandise store reported second quarter total sales edged up 0.7% to $452.7 million from $449.5 million last year. Comparable store sales for the quarter decreased 0.4%.

Net income in the quarter rose 3% to $5.1 million or 13 cents per diluted share compared to $5.0 million or 13 cents per share a year ago period.

Guess, Inc. ((GES)) decreased 4.2% or $1.40 to $31.89 after the apparel and accessory retailer reported second quarter revenue increased 17% to $677.2 million from $577.1 million in the same quarter last year. Net earnings in the quarter decreased 9% to $60.7 million or 65 cents per diluted share compared to $66.8 million or 72 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

Hormel Foods Corporation ((HRL)) decreased 5.4% or $1.56 to $26.88 after the food products maker reported third quarter net sales rose 10.4% to $1.91 billion from $1.73 billion last year. Net earnings in the quarter grew 15.4% to $98.48 million or 36 cents per diluted share compared to $85.37 million or 32 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.

Heico Corporation ((HEI)) increased 2.8% or $1.43 to $52.41 after the aircraft components maker reported third quarter net sales increased 25% to $197.3 million from $158.3 million last year. Net income in the quarter soared 37% to $20.4 million or 48 cents per diluted share compared to $14.9 million or 35 cents per share a year ago.

Patterson Companies, Inc. ((PDCO)) slumped 10.2% or $3.07 to $26.84 after the medical equipments supplier reported first quarter revenue increased 6% to $847.4 million from $849.8 million in the same quarter last year. Net earnings in the quarter fell to $48.6 million or 42 cents per diluted share compared to $53.9 million or 45 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.

Regis Corporation ((RGS)) decreased 1.3% or 19 cents to $14.10 after the hair and retail product salons operator reported fourth quarter revenue rose to $592 million from $590 million in the same quarter last year. Net loss in the quarter was $16.4 million or 29 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $18.3 million or 30 cents per share a year ago earlier.

Sanderson Farms, Inc. ((SAFM)) rose 0.6% or 26 cents to $40.60 after the poultry products maker said third quarter net sales increased 25% to $511.2 million from $489.1 million last year. Net loss in the quarter was $55.7 million or $2.51 per diluted share compared to net income of $36.1 million or $1.55 per share a year ago.

Signet Jewelers Limited ((SIG)) rose 1.2% or 45 cents to $35.61 after the Bermuda based specialty retail jeweler reported second quarter total sales increased 10.8% to $797.6 million from $719.7 million last year. Same store sales for the quarter increased 9.9%.

Net income in the quarter surged 71.3% to $66.3 million or 76 cents per diluted share compared to $38.7 million or 45 cents per share a year ago period.

Semtech Corporation ((SMTC)) rose 1.8% or 38 cents to $20.75 after the semiconductor product supplier said second quarter revenue increased 15% to $130.3 million from $122.4 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter rose $27.1 million or 40 cents per diluted share compared to $22.6 million or 34 cents per share a year ago earlier.

TiVo Inc. ((TIVO)) soared 15.7% or $1.28 to $9.40 the media software, hardware, and service provider reported second quarter revenue rose to $61.2 million from $51.5 million in the same quarter last year. Net loss in the quarter widened to $19.5 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to $15.3 million or 13 cents per share a year ago.

Vanguard Health Systems, Inc. ((VHS)) decreased 4.6% or 69 cents to $14.15 after the healthcare facility provider reported fourth quarter total revenue soared 75% to $1,501.8 million from $858.4 million in the same quarter last year. Net loss in the quarter was $9.9 million or 21 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.8 million or 6 cents per share a year ago earlier.
