ACE Limited ((ACE)) gained 3.4% or $2.26 to $68.14 after the Switzerland based insurance and reinsurance reported second quarter gross premiums written increased to $5.42 billion from $5.15 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter decreased to $607 million or $1.77 per diluted share compared to $677 million or $1.98 per share in the year-ago period.

Amazon.com, Inc. ((AMZN)) increased 4.9% or $10.59 to $224.77 after the online retailer reported second quarter net sales soared 51% to $9.91 billion from $6.57 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter decreased 8% to $191 million or 41 cents per diluted share compared to $207 million or 45 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.

ConocoPhillips ((COP)) rose 0.1% or 14 cents to $73.75 after the energy company reported second quarter revenue soared to $67.0 billion from $50.1 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter declined to $3.4 billion or $2.41 per diluted share compared to $4.1 billion or $2.77 per share a year ago.

Corning Inc. ((GLW)) decreased 5.9% or $1.02 to $16.27 after the personal and household products maker reported second quarter sales increased 17% to $2 billion from $1.7 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter decreased 17% to $755 million or 47 cents per diluted share compared to $913 million or 58 cents per share a year earlier.

Delta Air Lines, Inc. ((DAL)) decreased 1.7% or 34 cents to $18.71 after the airline company reported second quarter revenue increased 12% to $9.1 billion from $8.2 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter declined 58% to $198 million or 23 cents per diluted share compared to $467 million or 55 cents per share a year ago.

Energizer Holdings, Inc. ((ENR)) advanced 5.2% or $4.08 to $82 after the batteries, portable lighting and personal care products maker reported third quarter net sales rose 8.1% to $1.23 billion from $1.07 billion in the same quarter last year. Net earnings in the quarter decreased to $65.9 million or $0.94 per diluted share compared to $104.0 million or $1.47 per share in the prior-year quarter.

Exelon Corporation ((EXC)) increased 2% or 91 cents to $45.12 after the electricity services provider reported second quarter sales increased to $4.6 billion from $4.4 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $620 million or 93 cents per diluted share compared to $445 million or 67 cents per share a year earlier.

Electronic Arts Inc. ((ERTS)) fell 0.8% or 19 cents to $23.60 after the game software maker said first quarter revenue increased to $999 million from $815 million in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter soared to $221 million or 66 cents per diluted share compared to $96 million or 29 cents per share a year ago.

Gilead Sciences, Inc. ((GILD)) increased 1.8% or 75 cents to $42.91 after the biopharmaceutical company reported second quarter total revenues increased 11% to $2.14 billion from $1.93 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $746.2 million or 93 cents per diluted share compared to $712.1 million or 79 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.

Hospira, Inc. ((HSP)) increased 1.7% or 91 cents to $53.01 after the pharmaceutical and medication delivery company reported second quarter net sales increased 9.9% to $1.06 billion from $0.97 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter surged 72% to $143.6 million or 85 cents per diluted share compared to $83.5 million or 49 cents per share a year earlier.

Illumina, Inc. ((ILMN)) slumped 13.4% or $9.38 to $60.27 after the life science tools maker reported second quarter revenue increased 36% to $287.5 million from $212.0 million in the same quarter last year. P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Inc. ((PFCB)) decreased 13% or $5.12 to $34.13 after the restaurants operator reported second quarter total revenue edged down to $311.0 million from $312.8 million in the same quarter last year. Comparable store sales fell 2.5% at the Bistro and 2.7% at Pei Wei. Net income in the quarter decreased to $9.1 million or 40 cents per diluted share compared to $12.7 million or 55 cents per share a year ago.

Ryder System, Inc. ((R)) gained 3.6% or $2.10 to $59.75 after the transportation company reported second quarter revenue rose 18% to $1.51 billion from $1.29 billion in the same quarter last year. Net earnings in the quarter increased to $40 million or 77 cents per diluted share compared to $29.8 million or 56 cents per share a year ago.

The Southern Company ((SO)) fell 0.2% or 9 cents to $40.17 after the power company reported second quarter revenues increased 7.5% to $4.52 billion from $4.21 billion in the same quarter last year. Net earnings in the quarter increased to $603.3 million or 71 cents per diluted share compared to $510.2 million or 62 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.

The Boeing Company ((BA)) advanced 4.3% or $3.02 to $73.18 after the aerospace company reported second quarter revenues rose 6% to $16.5 billion from $15.6 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter increased 20% to $941 million or $1.25 per diluted share compared to $787 million or $1.06 per share a year earlier.

The Dow Chemical Company ((DOW)) rose 0.1% or 4 cents to $35.89 after the diversified manufacturer and supplier reported second quarter net sales increased to $16 billion from $13.6 billion in the same quarter last year.
