Apache Corporation ((APA)) gained 2.3% or $2.93 to $129.85 after the energy company reported first quarter revenues rose to $3.92 billion compared to $2.67 billion in the same period last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $1.11 billion or $2.86 per diluted share compared to $0.70 billion or $2.08 per share a year ago.
Akamai Technologies, Inc. ((AKAM)) tumbled 14.2% or $5.84 to $35.14 after the online internet application service provider reported first quarter sales soared 15% to $276 million compared to $240 million in the same period last year. ((BIDU)) fell 0.5 or 89 cents to $150.22 after the Chinese language Internet search provider said first quarter revenue grew 88.3% to RMB 2.436 billion from RMB 1.294 billion in the year-ago period. Net income in the quarter surged 122.8% to RMB 1.071 billion compared to RMB 480.5 million in the year-ago quarter. On a per-ADS basis, earnings for the quarter rose to RMB 3.06 or $0.47 from RMB 1.38 or $0.20 last year.
BP p.l.c. ((BP)) fell 0.3% or 15 cents to $46.38 after the UK based international oil and gas refinery reported first quarter sales soared to $88.3 billion compared to $74.4 billion in the same period last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $7.12 billion or $1.75 per diluted share compared to $6.07 billion or $1.79 per share a year ago.
Colgate-Palmolive Company ((CL)) rose 0.8% or 69 cents to $81.76 after the consumer products maker reported first quarter net sales grew 4.5% to $3.99 billion from $3.83 billion last year. Net profit in the quarter surged 61.3% to $576 million or $1.16 per share compared to $357 million or $0.69 per share in the prior-year quarter.
Cardinal Health, Inc. ((CAH)) slipped 1.6% or 76 cents to $43.35 after the healthcare solutions company reported third quarter revenue grew 7% to $26.1 billion from $24.3 billion last year. Net earnings in the quarter surged 11% to $246.0 million or 70 cents per share compared to $222.4 million or 61 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.
Citrix Systems, Inc. ((CTXS)) surged 11.5% or $8.99 to $86.82 after the technology solutions provider reported first quarter sales soared 18% to $491 million compared to $414 million in the same period last year. eBay Inc. ((EBAY)) slumped 1.2% or 43 cents to $33.60 after the online auctioneer said first quarter revenue increased 16% to $2.55 billion from $2.20 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter rose 20% to $475.9 million or 36 cents per share compared to $397.7 million or 30 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.
General Dynamics Corporation ((GD)) slipped 1.4% or $1.02 to $71.70 after the military and commercial technology company reported first quarter revenue rose 0.6% to $7.8 billion from $7.7 billion in the prior-year period. Net income in the quarter increased 3.5% to $618 million or $1.66 per diluted share compared to $597 million or $1.55 per share last year.
LoopNet, Inc. ((LOOP)) soared 27.9% or $4.02 to $18.39 after the online marketplace acquired by CoStar Group, Inc. ((CSGP)), the commercial real estate information company. Pursuant to the merger agreement LoopNet shareholders will receive $16.50 in cash and 0.03702 shares of CoStar Group. Total equity value of approximately $860 million. Transaction expected to close by the end of 2011.
Norfolk Southern Corp. ((NSC)) surged 6.7% or $4.59 to $73.00 after the holding company for the Norfolk Southern Railway, reported first quarter railway operating revenues increased 17% to $2.6 billion from $2.2 billion last year, on increase in revenue per unit as well as volume. Net income in the quarter rose 26.5% to $325 million or 90 cents per share compared to net income of $257 million or 68 cents per share in the year-ago quarter.
PepsiCo, Inc. ((PEP)) increased 1.3% or 90 cents to $68.83 after the food and beverage giant reported first quarter net revenue increased 27% to $11.94 billion from $9.37 billion reported in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter declined 20% to $1.14 billion or 71 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $1.43 billion or 89 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.
Starbucks Corporation ((SBUX)) fell 0.3% or 13 cents to $37.06 after the specialty coffee retailer said second quarter total net revenues rose 10% to $2.79 billion from $2.53 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter rose 20% to $261.6 million or 34 cents per diluted share compared to $217.3 million or 28 cents per share for the year-ago quarter.
Shutterfly, Inc. ((SFLY)) soared 11.8% or $6.69 to $63.22 after the Internet based social website reported first quarter revenue soared 25% to $57.2 million from $45.7 million last year. Net loss in the quarter widened to $7.76 million or 27 cents per share compared to $4.73 million or 18 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.
The Procter & Gamble Company ((PG)) rose 0.3% or 22 cents to $64.24 after the consumer products maker reported first quarter sales rose 5% to $20.2 billion compared to $19.2 billion in the same period last year. Net earnings in the quarter increased 11% to $2.87 billion or 96 cents per diluted share compared to $2.59 billion or 83 cents per share a year ago.
The Lubrizol Corporation ((LZ)) fell 0.3% or 44 cents to $134.58 after the chemical company reported first quarter sales rose to $1.52 billion compared to $1.32 billion in the same period last year. Net income in the quarter increased to $169.5 million or $2.57 per diluted share compared to $162.3 million or $2.32 per share a year ago.
The Dun & Bradstreet Corporation ((DNB)) slumped 1.1% or 95 cents to $82.38 after the commercial information provider stated first quarter total revenue rose 1% to $403.6 million from $397.2 million in the same period last year. Net income in the quarter increased 7% to $49.8 million or $1.00 per diluted share compared to $46.7 million or $0.92 per share in the year-ago quarter.
The Allstate Corporation ((ALL)) surged 5.4% or $1.79 to $33.73 after the home and auto insurer, said first quarter revenues increased 4.5% to $8.10 billion from $7.75 billion in the same quarter last year.
