Net income in the quarter surged 30% to $700 million or 31 cents per diluted share compared to $540 million or 24 cents per share for the year-ago quarter.
For the full year, net sales fell 1% to $31.59 billion from $31.79 billion. Net income decreased to $2.56 billion or $1.12 per share compared to $2.90 billion or $1.27 per share a year ago.
Alere Inc. ((ALR)) plunged 3.9% or $1.57 to $38.17 after the diagnostics and health solution provider said fourth quarter net revenue increased to $578.5 million from $546.2 million for the year-ago period. Net loss in the quarter soared to $1.0 billion or $12.24 per diluted share compared to $3.1 million or $0.04 per share from a year ago.
ALLETE, Inc. ((ALE)) rose 0.6% or 24 cents to $37.59 after the energy company reported fourth quarter operating revenue increased to $238.1 million from $216.0 million for the year ago period. Net income in the quarter fell to $13.3 million or 38 cents per diluted share compared to $18.7 million or 56 cents per share from a year ago.
Arbitron Inc. ((ARB)) rose 0.5% or 22 cents to $43.81 after the media and marketing company said fourth quarter revenue increased 10% to $111.6 million from $101.5 million for the year ago period. Barrick Gold Corporation ((ABX)) gained 1.3% or 68 cents to $50.40 after the Canada based gold, copper producer reported fourth quarter sales increased to $2.95 billion from $2.36 billion in the same quarter last year. Net income in the quarter surged to $896 million or 90 cents per diluted share compared to $215 million or 21 cents per share for the year-ago quarter.
For the full year, net sales soared to $10.92 billion from $8.14 billion. Net income was $3.27 billion or $3.28 per share compared to net loss of $4.27 billion or $4.73 per share a year ago.
Corn Products International, Inc. ((CPO)) increased 1% or 52 cents to $49.12 after the ingredients maker said fourth quarter net sales soared 47% to $1.41 billion compared to $0.96 billion from a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 8% to $52.0 million or 67 cents per diluted share compared to $56.3 million or 74 cents per share for the year-ago quarter.
For the full year, net sales increased 19% to $4.37 billion from $3.67 billion. Net income surged 312% $169.2 million or $2.20 per share compared to $41.1 million or $0.54 per share from a year ago.
CBS Corporation ((CBS)) slumped 1.5% or 34 cents to $21.76 after the mass media company reported fourth quarter revenues grew 11% to $3.90 billion from $3.50 billion for the year-ago period. Net earnings in the quarter soared 381% to $283.0 million or 41 cents per diluted share compared to $58.8 million or 9 cents per share in the prior-year quarter.
Revenues for the full year grew 8% to $14.06 billion from $13.01 billion in the fiscal year 2009. For the full year, net income rose 220% to $724.2 million or $1.04 per share from $226.5 million or $0.33 per share in the fiscal year 2009.
Cablevision Systems Corporation ((CVC)) gained 3.1% or $1.14 to $37.95 after the cable operator reported fourth quarter revenues rose 5.7% to $1.87 billion from $1.77 billion for the year-ago period. Net income in the quarter soared to $113.8 million or 38 cents per diluted share compared to $78.4 million or 26 cents per share from a year ago.
Revenues for the full year increased 5.6% to $7.23 billion from $6.85 billion in the fiscal year 2009. For the full year, net income rose to $360.9 million or $1.20 per share from $285.5 million or $0.96 per share in the fiscal year 2009.
Cliffs Natural Resources Inc. ((CLF)) soared 8.1% or $7.53 to $100.41 after the mining and natural resources company said fourth quarter revenues soared 74% to $1.42 billion from $820.5 million in the same quarter of last year. Net income in the quarter surged 255% to $384 million or $2.82 per diluted share compared to $108.2 million or 82 cents per share from a year ago.

For the full year, revenues surged 82% to $44.97 billion from $24.72 billion a year ago. Net income increased 43% to $1.18 billion or $2.19 per share from $827.6 million or $1.57 per share the previous year.
FirstEnergy Corp. ((FE)) fell 0.4% or 19 cents to $38.23 after the electric utility stated fourth quarter revenue rose 9% to $3.22 billion from $2.96 billion in the prior-year period. Jarden Corporation ((JAH)) soared 5.7% or $1.96 to $36.31 after the consumer products company reported fourth quarter net sales increased 21% to $1.7 billion from $1.4 billion in the same quarter of last year. Net income in the quarter surged to $46.7 million or 52 cents per diluted share compared to $1.2 million or 1 cent per share a year ago.
Net sales for the year rose 17% to $6.0 billion from $5.1 billion last year. For fiscal year 2010, net income declined to $106.7 million or $1.19 per share from $128.7 million or $1.52 per share in the prior year.
Lenovo Group Limited ((LNVGY.PK)) gained 3.4% or 42 cents to $12.55 after the personal computers maker reported third quarter consolidated sales climbed 22% to $5.81 billion from $4.76 billion in the prior year quarter. Net profit in the quarter grew 25% to $100 million or 98 cents per diluted share compared to net profit of $80 million or79 cents per share last year, mainly reflecting strong PC shipment growth across all geographies and product lines.
Morningstar, Inc. ((MORN)) increased 1% or 56 cents to $56.14 after the financial data company reported fourth quarter net sales increased 23.2% to $151.2 million from $122.6 million in the same quarter of last year. Net income in the quarter surged to $27. 4 million or 54 cents per diluted share compared to $14.8 million or 29 cents per share a year ago.
Net sales for the year rose 15.9% to $555.4 million from $479.0 million last year. In 2010, net income rose to $86.4 million or $1.70 per share from $82.1 million or $1.65 per share in the prior year.
NetApp Inc. ((NTAP)) tumbled 9.3% or $5.45 to $53.09 after the data storage device company reported third quarter net revenues increased 26% to $1.27 billion from $1.01 billion last year. Net income in the quarter increased 60% to $172.5 million or 42 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $107.9 million or 30 cents per share in the previous year.
Newfield Exploration Company ((NFX)) slumped 5.3%or $3.80 to $67.77 after the oil and gas exploration company reported fourth quarter revenue increased to $528 million from $414 million in the same quarter of last year. Net income in the quarter plunged to $22 million or 17 cents per diluted share compared to $113 million or 86 cents per share a year ago.

Net income in the quarter rose 31% to $171.7 million or 29 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $131.1 million or 23 cents per share for the year-ago quarter.
Revenue for the fiscal year 2011 rose 6.3% to $3.54 billion from $3.33 billion the prior year. For the fiscal year 2011, the company reported net income of $253.1 million or $0.43 per share compared to a net loss of $68.0 million or $0.12 per share for the fiscal year 2010.
Oceaneering International, Inc.
