GameStop Corp led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 6.2% followed by gains in Apollo Group, Inc of 2.8%, in DeVry Inc of 1.8% and in Capital One Financial Corporation of 1.5%.

Advance Auto Parts, Inc ((AAP)) added 4.2% or $1.94 to $48.03 after the auto parts retailer said first quarter sales rose 9% to $1.83 billion from $1.68 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 17% to $109.4 million or $1.19 per diluted share compared to net income of $93.6 million or 98 cents per share a year ago.

Applied Materials, Inc ((AMAT)) rose 0.2% or 3 cents to $13.05 after the producer of chip-making gear said second quarter sales rose 125.5% to $2.30 billion from $1.02 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $264.0 million or 20 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $255.4 million or 19 cents per share a year ago.

Autodesk, Inc ((ADSK)) added 3.8% or $1.17 to $31.52 after an engineering software maker said first quarter sales rose 11.5% to $474.6 million from $425.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $36.9 million or 16 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $32.1 million or 14 cents per share a year ago.

The Buckle, Inc ((BKE)) dropped 3.4% or 89 cents to $34.00 an apparel retailer reported first quarter sales rose 7.6% to $214.8 million from $199.7 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 12.3% to $30.1 million or 64 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $26.8 million or 58 cents per share a year ago.

The Children''s Place Retail Stores, Inc ((PLCE)) traded unchanged at $41.50 after the retailer reported first quarter sales rose 5% to $422.1 million from $401.9 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 19% to $27.9 million or $1.00 per diluted share compared to net income of $23.5 million or 79 cents per share a year ago.

Computer Sciences Corporation ((CSC)) fell 1.5% or 78 cents to $48.33 after the information technology and professional services industry reported fourth quarter revenues rose 2.4% to $4.2 billion from $4.1 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 32% to $259 million or $1.66 per diluted share compared to net income of $382 million or $2.51 per share a year ago.

Dollar Tree, Inc ((DLTR)) rose 2.9% or $1.73 to $61.40 after the discount retailer reported first quarter sales rose 12.5% to $1.35 billion from $1.20 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 5% to $63.6 million or 73 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $60.4 million or 66 cents per share a year ago.

GameStop Corp ((GME)) increased 2.2% or 58 cents to $21.86 after the video game and entertainment software retailer reported first quarter sales rose 5% to $2.08 billion from $1.98 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 7% to $75.2 million or 48 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $70.4 million or 42 cents per share a year ago.

The Gymboree Corporation ((GYMB)) rose 1.3% or 60 cents to $45.00 after the specialty retailer said first quarter sales rose 9.5% to $252.8 million from $230.9 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 34% to $29.2 million or 99 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $21.8 million or 74 cents per share a year ago.

Hot Topic, Inc ((HOTT)) fell 8.1% or 53 cents to $6.00 after the teen apparel retailer said first quarter sales fell 7.4% to $162.6 million from $175.1 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $1.8 million or 4 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $1.2 million or 3 cents per share a year ago.

Limited Brands, Inc ((LTD)) dropped 3.0% or 74 cents to $23.75 after the specialty retailer of women’s intimate said first quarter sales rose 11.5% to $1.93 billion from $1.73 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $112.5 million or 34 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $2.6 million or 1 cent per share a year ago.

MF Global Holdings Ltd ((MF)) fell 4.9% or 40 cents to $7.72 after the company reported fourth quarter net loss of 17 cents a share compared to profit of 3 cents a year ago.

Patterson Companies, Inc ((PDCO)) traded unchanged at $29.92 after the maker of medical supplies is forecasting earnings of $1.89 to $1.99 per diluted share for fiscal 2011.

Dr Pepper Snapple Group, Inc ((DPS)) fell 0.1% or after the beverage company announced that its Board of Directors declared a quarterly dividend of $0.25 per share on the company''s common stock.

PetSmart, Inc ((PETM)) fell 2.3% or 77 cents to $31.57 after the pet products retailer said first quarter sales rose 5% to $1.40 billion from $1.33 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 20% to $55.6 million or 46 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $46.3 million or 37 cents per share a year ago.

Ross Stores, Inc ((ROST)) fell 1.7% or 91 cents to $50.89 after the off-price retailer reported first quarter sales rose 14% to $1.93 billion from $1.69 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 55.7% to $142.3 million or $1.16 per diluted share compared to net income of $91.4 million or 72 cents per share a year ago.

Sears Holdings Corporation ((SHLD)) fell 6.0% or $6.01 to $93.99 after the retailer reported first quarter sales fell 0.1% to $10.05 billion from $10.06 billion a year ago. Synopsys, Inc ((SNPS)) fell 1.7% or 38 cents to $21.42 after the maker of chip testing and development software said second quarter sales rose 0.4% to $338.1 million from $336.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 18% to $39.5 million or 26 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $48.3 million or 33 cents per share a year ago.

VeriSign, Inc ((VRSN)) rose 2.9% or 83 cents to $28.82 after the operator of computers that direct Internet traffic said it has reached a definitive agreement to sell its Authentication Services business to Symantec Corp. for about $1.28 billion in cash.

Williams-Sonoma, Inc ((WSM)) rose 0.5% or 16 cents to $28.60 after the specialty retailer of products for the home reported first quarter revenues rose 17.3% to $717.6 million from $611.6 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $19.5 million or 18 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $18.7 million or 18 cents per share a year ago.
