Massey Energy Company led the decliners in the S&P 500 index with a loss of 5.6% followed by losses in News Corporation of 4.2% and in Whirlpool Corporation of 3.3%, in The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company of 3.3% and in Abercrombie & Fitch Co of 3.2%.
Pactiv Corporation led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 5.4% followed by gains in Visa Inc. of 3.3%, in MasterCard Incorporated of 3.1% and in Analog Devices, Inc. of 3.0%.

Analog Devices, Inc. ((ADI)) added 2.3% or 65 cents to $28.25 after the chip maker said first quarter sales rose 41% to $668.2 million from $474.7 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 222.4% to $167.1 million or 55 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $51.8 million or 18 cents per share a year ago.
American Apparel, Inc. ((APP)) plunged 20.0% or 55 cents to $2.19. The fashion apparel retailer reported net sales $121.8 million, a 6.6% increase over net sales of $114.3 million a year ago.
BJ’s Wholesale Club, Inc. ((BJ)) added 4.5% or $1.63 to $39.07 after the warehouse club operator reported first quarter sales rose 13% to $2.55 billion from $2.26 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 7.4% to $26.1 million or 49 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $24.3 million or 45 cents per share a year ago.
Brady Corporation ((BRC)) decreased 4.1% or $1.35 to $31.11. The manufacturer of identification solutions and specialty materials reported third quarter sales rose 16.3% to $321.9 million from $276.7 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 31.6% to $23.7 million or 45 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $18 million or 34 cents per share a year ago.
Chico’s FAS, Inc. ((CHS)) plunged 12.6% or $1.79 to $12.37. The women''s apparel retailer reported first quarter sales rose 17% to $481.6 million from $410.6 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 144% to $35.4 million or 20 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $14.5 million or 8 cents per share a year ago.
ChipMOS Technologies (Bermuda) Ltd ((IMOS)), the packager and tester of computer chips surged 10.9% or 18 cents to $1.83.
Culp, Inc. ((CFI)), the maker of upholstery fabrics added 3.3% or 44 cents to $13.63.
Deere & Company ((DE)) rose 0.8% or 47 cents to $57.63 after the maker of tractors and harvesters reported second quarter sales rose 6% to $6.55 billion from $6.19 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 16% to $547 million or $1.28 per diluted share compared to net income of $472 million or $1.11 per share a year ago.
DHT Holdings, Inc. ((DHT)) rose 3.7% or 15 cents to $4.20. The operator of a fleet of double-hull tankers reported first quarter sales fell 25% to $22.4 million from $29.8 million a year ago. Net loss in the quarter was $2.2 million or 5 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $6.9 million or 17 cents per share a year ago.
Eaton Vance Corp. ((EV)) fell 2.6% or 90 cents to $32.51. The investment manager reported second quarter revenues rose 38% to $273 million from $198.4 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 40% to $36 million or 29 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $25.8 million or 21 cents per share a year ago.
Hewlett-Packard Company ((HPQ)) rose 2.2% or $1.06 to $47.85 after the maker of PCs and printers said second quarter sales rose 12.4% to $30.8 billion from $27.4 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 29.4% to $2.2 billion or 91 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $1.7 billion or 71 cents per share a year ago.
Hormel Foods Corporation ((HRL)) fell 2.1% or 89 cents to $40.89. The food maker reported second quarter sales rose 6% to $1.7 billion from $1.6 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter fell 3% to $77.9 million or 57 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $80.4 million or 59 cents per share a year ago.
Northrop Grumman Corporation ((NOC)), the defense company fell 0.4% or 30 cents to $62.55.
Photronics, Inc. ((PLAB)) rose 8.9% or 44 cents to $5.35 after the provider of imaging technology said second quarter sales rose 26.3% to $105.1 million from $83.2 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $7.9 million or 14 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $10.0 million or 24 cents per share a year ago.
Polo Ralph Lauren Corporation ((RL)) dropped 2.6% or $2.23 to $83.55. The fashion company reported fourth quarter sales rose 9.3% to $1.29 billion from $1.18 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 156.4% to $114.1 million or $1.13 per diluted share compared to net income of $44.5 million or 44 cents per share a year ago.
Target Corporation ((TGT)) fell 1.3% or 64 cents to $53.58. The discounter reported first quarter sales rose 5.5% to $15.2 billion from $14.4 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 28.6% to $671 million or 90 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $522 million or 69 cents per share a year ago.
