Xerox Corporation led gainers in the S&P 500 index with a rise of 8.1% followed by gains in Dover Corporation 7.7%, in Western Digital Corporation of 7.4% and in Lennar Corporation 6.8%.

Amcol International Corporation ((ACO)) gained 5.3% or $1.54 to $30.60 after the producer of specialty minerals first quarter sales rose 6.4% to $175.0 million from $164.4 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 45% to $6.1 million or 20 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $4.2 million or 14 cents per share a year ago.
Amazon.com, Inc ((AMZN)) decreased 4.8% or $7.32 to $142.77 after the online retail company said first quarter sales rose 46% to $7.13 billion from $4.89 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 69% to $299 million or 66 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $177 million or 41 cents per share a year ago.
American Express Company ((AXP)) added 1.3% or 62 cents to $47.39 after the credit-card giant said first quarter revenues rose 11.5% to $6.61 billion from $5.93 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 102.5% to $885 million or 73 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $437 million or 31 cents per share a year ago.
Arthur J. Gallagher & Co ((AJG)) added 2.1% or 55 cents to $26.31 after the insurance broker said first quarter revenues rose 20.3% to $482.4 million from $401.1 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 10.6% to $29.2 million or 28 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $26.4 million or 27 cents per share a year ago.

Net income in the quarter rose 36% to $464 million or $1.39 per diluted share compared to net income of $341 or 95 cents per share a year ago.
The Cheesecake Factory ((CAKE)) slipped 5.6% or $1.71 to $28.75 after the restaurant said first quarter revenues rose 3.2% to $405.4 million from $392.8 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 87% to $18.7 million or 31 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $10.0 million or 17 cents per share a year ago.
CMS Energy Corporation ((CMS)) fell 0.3% or 5 cents to $15.75 an energy company reported first quarter sales fell 6% to $1.97 billion from $2.10 billion a year ago. Net income in the quarter rose 21.4% to $85 million or 34 cents per diluted share compared to net income of $70 million or 30 cents per share a year ago.
Costco Wholesale Corporation ((COST)) rose 0.4% or 28 cents to $60.50 after the warehouse club said it’s raising the quarterly dividend on its shares to 20.5 cents from 18 cents previously.
Cymer, Inc. ((CYMI)) declined 7.1% or $2.82 to $36.87 after the supplier of light sources said first quarter revenues rose 101.4% to $113.8 million from $56.5 million a year ago. Net income in the quarter was $16.0 million or 53 cents per diluted share compared to net loss of $11.5 million or 39 cents per share a year ago.
