Martket averages maintained a positive bias. Merger news and economic report on durable goods kept averages charging ahead. Durable goods orders in May fell 0.3% after dropping 4.8% in April. Goldman Sachs led group acquired the Associated British Ports Honding in a bid valued at $5.17 billion. European markets closed up by a fraction and in the overnight trading most Asian markets closed lower across the region. Latin markets closed higher led by more than 1% gain in Mexico and Brazil.

European stocks closed near the unchanged mark as rally in the energy sector partly offset concerns over economic growth and global interest rate increases. The French Total rose 2.4%, Royal Dutch Shell advanced 1.4% on upgrade from Deutsche Bank, and gas explorer BG Group climbed 2.7%. The German DAX 30 ended down 0.1%, the French CAC 40 rose 0.3%, and London FTSE added 0.1%.

Stocks traded near the flat line as cautiousness ahead of Fed Reserve meeting on interest rates next week offset merger-and-acquisition news in the energy sector worth $21 billion. Anadarko Petroleum Corp. fell 4.7% after it agreed to acquire Kerr-McGee and Western Gas Resources in separate cash deals totaling $21.1 billion. Shares of Kerr-McGee soared 37%, while Western Gas Resources surged 46%.

Stocks dropped at opening as a government report showed the first back-to-back decline in durable goods orders in two years, giving a surprising sign that the economy is modereating at a faster pace than largely expected. Factory orders dropped 0.3% in May after a sharper 4.7% plunge in April. The weakness was mostly contributed by big declines in orders for commercial aircraft, down 17.9%.

Oracle reported Q4 earnings, in line with the upwardly revised guidance that the software company provided last week. Oracle posted net income of 24 cents per share on revenue of $4.85 billion to 20 cents per share on $3.88 billion in revenue last year. Excluding special items, the company earned 29 cents per share, a penny above analyst estimates.

Reportedly, Univision rejected the proposed bid, telling the group it needed to increase its offer. The group''s offer was slightly more than $35 per share and below the $40 per share the company had reportedly been seeking.

Markets in Asia continued to follow American markets Friday morning, as U.S. data, showing the economy may be slowing, weighed Japanese stocks down led by automakers Nissan and Honda and tech exporters including Fujitsu and Hitachi. Analysts said although recent U.S. economy data is bad news for Japanese exporters, large conglomerates are less dependent on stateside consumers than in earlier decades.

Gold also may have found some difficulties approaching the key $600 psychological area, as it reached overnight $598.30 an ounce and then pulled back. The precious metals may also have suffered a bit from a relatively poor performance by the mining stocks. However it is hard to deny the bearish impact of the dollar jump.

Market averages closed lower on rate worries and investors nervousness a week before rate meeting. Averages declined led by a near 1% decline in Nasdaq averages. European and Asian markets closed higher but markets in Latin America close lower. Gold declined $5.60 and crude oil less than 1%. In overnight trading Japan closed 3.4%. Oracle revenue rose 25% and earnings gained 27% meeting the expectations.

The company closed down 5.9% after the carrier disclosed that the U.K. Office of Fair Trading and the U.S. Justice Department are looking into the carrier and other airlines over pricing and fuel surcharges. The German DAX 30 rose 0.55%, the French CAC 40 gained 0.6%, and London FTSE 100 rose 0.3%.

Family Dollar advanced 2.4% in pre-market trading after the company reported better-than-expected Q3 earnings. The discount retailer said income advanced to 37 cents a share from 32 cents in the year-ago period, with sales rising to $1.57 billion from $1.43 billion. The company also raised its full year earnings forecast.
