Weak Housing Starts, Jobless Claims Fall

Two economic reports on jobless claims and new home construction confirm the growing belief that current recession may last longer than 2009. The jobless claims declined at the end of last week, but hovered above 600,000. Housing starts plunged in March, a fall in eight of the last nine months.

The homebuilder quarterly revenues plunged 44% to $593 million. Net quarterly loss rose 76.7% to $155.9 million. The company lost 98 cents a share compared to a loss of 56 cents a year-ago quarter. New home deliveries declined 40% to 2,142 and backlog plunged 52% to 1,647 homes in the quarter.

U.S. stocks edged higher in the morning trading after the latest read on industrial production and consumer price index showed decline. The decline in both indexes was viewed by the market as deferring inflation. Capacity utilization fell to the lowest since data collection began in 1967.
