Revenues rose 68% to $4.36 billion and net income rose 1,986% to $897 million or $2.00 a share. Operating cash flows in the quarter very strong at 1.8 billion. Consolidated unit net cash cost averaged $0.81 per pound in the first quarter of 2010.

Revenues rose 214% to $9.1 billion and net income was $1.41 billion or 99 cents a share. Profit before tax was $2.1 billion and the PVT margin was 39% compared to 14% last quarter. Profit before tax was $78 million and the PBT margin was 9%. PBT was $173 million for a margin of 26%.

Higher consumer spending lifted preliminary estimate of the first quarter GDP growth to 3.2%. However housing investments declined 10.9% in the quarter. Contribution from the inventory rebuilding declined sharply in the quarter.

In nervous trading U.K. stocks closed higher as positive earnings lifted select stocks. Unilever Plc, BSkyB and AstraZeneca gained on higher earnings. Mortgage approvals increased 4.6% in March and home prices in April increased as higher demand.
