Eurozone Trade Balance Swings to Deficit

  • Eurozone merchandise trade balance swings to deficit in July after surging energy imports overwhelmed double-digit increase in exports.

    The euro area trade balance swung to a merchandise trade deficit of €34 billion in July from a surplus of €20.7 billion a year ago. 

    Exports from the eurozone rose 13.3% to €235.5 billion and imports soared 44% to €269.5 billion. 

    For the period between January and July,  exports rose 17.9% to €1,628.5 billion and imports soared 43.4% to €1,805.9 billion. 

    Trade balance in the period swung to a deficit of  €177.4 billion from a surplus of €121.3 billion.
